Trouble with SSH on SUSE 9.3 Pro

I recently switched my home server from Mandrake 10.0 to Suse 9.3
professional. On mandrake I ran a web server and a ssh server that I
allowed a friend to access so that he could manage his web site using
winscp.

Since I have switched to SUSE he can't connect to the ssh server
anymore. I, however, can connect from my computer which is behind my
LINKSYS switch. (I do have port 22 forwarded to my server's fixed IP
address.)

My friend starts winscp and a logon box comes up for his username and
password. he enters both but it just keeps popping up a form for his
password over and over again.

When he tries to logon using PUTTY we see an access denied message come
back from the server. I have modified my hosts.deny to deny no one
from anything and I have modified my hosts.allow to allow anyone to
access anything but the problem persists. (Even after rebooting the
server.)

I'm at my wits end with this. Any ideas?

Thanks.

The most likely reason is that your new SuSE sshd configuration defaults
to "PasswordAuthentication no". Put a line in /etc/ssh/sshd_config that
says "PasswordAuthentication yes", restart your sshd, and see if that
fixes the problem.

That did it. It works!

Thank you so much!
