Trouble setting up a wired network

I am trying to set up a network, primarily for an Internet connection,
from my Timewarner cable modem through a Netgear WGT 624 router which
is wired (Cat 5 cable) to my old (Windws 98) Compaq PC's HP EN
1207D-TX-PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adadter. It appears that a signal is
coming through, but I get the following message when I try to get onto
the internet: "Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site http://
------------. A connection could not be established."

When I go to my Device Manger and click on Network adapters< I see the
following Adapters: Dial-Up Adaper, Dial-Up Adapter #2 (PN Support),
Existing Ndis2 Driver, HP -------Fast Ethernet Adapter and Microsoft
Virtual Private Networking Adapter. By the way, I get a yellow
exclamation mark by the Existing Ndis2 Driver indicating that it is not
working properly. I reinstalled the driver. Same thing.

I'm sure that I must be doing something wrong. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks
