If anyone can help me with this I'd be very grateful.

I recently purchased a Netgear MR814 Version 2 router to run my laptop
wirelessly.

When I try to get the laptop to connect, I run into one of two
problems:

1. The signal shows up on the laptop, but when I hit connect, it just
goes into a loop and shows the "one or more connections is available
message" again

2. I get a strong signal, and it looks like I'm connected, but when I
open explorer, it doesn't connect to the internet and just goes to a
dead page.

I tried to research this on my own, and saw some ideas, but so far
nothing has worked for me. I'm normally pretty good on a computer,
but this networking thing is all new to me.

I contacted technical support at Netgear, and they told me to disable
the Zero Wireless Connection and use Netgear's connection tools. I
was able to disable the Zero Wireless Connection Utility, but wasn't
sure what to do after that. There wasn't anything that came with the
router to actually "install" on the computer - just the connection
setup wizard and the utility you access from the internet. When I
asked them about this, they told me to call. I did call, and the
person on the phone said I had to speak to the maker of the wireless
card in my laptop. It is an Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI
Adapter. I doubt that is the problem, though, as I first bought a
Linksys router. I did manage to get the laptop to connect wireless
with that, but had other problems with it. I decided to use the
Netgear router instead, as it has better reviews and built in SPI
security.

If anyone can help, I would be very grateful. I've had my new laptop
a while now but have hardly been able to use it. -Shari

I want to extend my DSL from my home to my office.

The office is 5.0km away from my home.

Home - 39m above sea level
Office - 16m above sea level.

Good line of sight, no hills, trees etc

I've got access point already to go, in waterproof box, power over
ethernet completed.

I've not completed the loss calculations of the link yet, but I'll be
using short lengths of LMR-400, and CAT 5 cable to run to APs.

I'm going to use Intel 2011B Access Point at the home and a Linksys
WET11 bridge at the Office.

Now aerials, for this point to point link should I use Parabolic Mesh
Antennas at either end, or Sector Antennas at AP, and Omni at WET11.

I'm concerened that alignment could be a problem, although I now which
directions to point the parablic mesh dishes.

Any thoughts?

To access your settings on the laptop, double click the icon in the systray
for your wireless connection. Check your settings on your router config
page and make sure they are the same on the laptop.

Craig Bartell used commercial parabolic mesh for his 7km
link, and is quite explicit about site survey and mapping.
He uses outdoor access points near the antennas.

David has pictures and narrative, with the access points indoors.

If money is of little or no concern, by all means put up the dish
antennas. You'll minimize the footprint of your coverage area, providing
a marginal increase in security, and you'll decrease the chances of
interference.

If cost is an issue, why not experiment with a couple of cantennas
first?

The settings do appear to be the same on the router and the laptop-
unless I am missing something.

I don't know what to do anymore.

In my case, with much difficulty and several calls to Netgear, we did
get my Netgear MR814 v2 to work wirelessly insofar as we are now able to
access the internet from the laptop via the DSL connection of the
desktop computer. However, have not yet been able to access the files
and programs on the desktop - including the printers hooked up to the
desktop (which was one of my priorities from the beginning). Desktop is
a Pentium II Win98SE, with plenty of memory and hard drive space.
Printers are: HPDeskJet connected to Pentium II desk computer via USP
port; and HPLaserJet III connected to Pentium II deks computer via
parallel port.

Basically, should I not be able to at least see the monitor screen - or
at least a list of files and programs that reside on the desktop? If
anyone has an answer to this, would be most appreciative. Certainly
Netgear seems to be unable to assist! Don't even answer my e-mails any
more!!

My apologies = forgot to mention that the laptop is an IBM Thinkpad
XPPro. Hope this info helps. MV

Hello! I purchased a similar setup as discussed in this thread and
experienced precisely the same issues (Netgear MR814 v2 and Intel 2100
3B Mini PCI; 33% dropped packets while connected, total loss of
connectivity after 30 min or so of use, with an inability to
re-connect afterwards).

I hope you have found the answer by now, but in the event not:
Disabling the Intel 2100 power management resolved all woes in my
case, and '11b now works flawlessly (w/WEP, MAC filtering, and Intel's
adapter management [MS autoconfig hobbled]).

To disable 2100 power management: Expand "Network Adapters" in device
manager & right-click|Properties the Intel 2100 3B adapter. Select the
"Advanced" tab, highlight the "Power Management" property, uncheck the
"Use default value" checkbox, and verify the slider is moved all the
way to the "Highest" setting.

Of course, this rather defeats the purpose of purchasing the
Centrino-centric wireless adapter, but I suppose a bit more
due-diligance on my part would have exposed this issue before
purchase...or at least saved me a bit of sanity.

I have a tosh portege r100 and that seems to be the same problem.
My trusty old Dlink 650 works fine in the tosh. so i'm sticking to
that at the moment. makes centrino a bit of a joke though.

The built-in intel 2100 wlan card always finds the access point
(draytek 2200w) using winxp zero config - but is very, very unreliable
in establishing and maintaining a usable connection.

I looked at my advanced tab for the intel card and could only find
sliders to set power management levels and a check box to use "default
value" - i am not able to turn it off. the tosh has driver 1.1.60 dd
27/03/03.
I can't find an update to the driver and intel site says is
manufacturer specific. is their a driver update for this card??
