Trouble getting MAC code

Just a heads up really.

I use Cobweb for ADSL at work, I have paid them happily for years with no
problems, i think the service comes from Tiscali.

Some months ago I started to have intermittent problems, a couple of BT
engineers have been out and 'fixed' stuff, service has been up and down and
currently I haven't connected for a week.
When I phone BT naturally they aren't interested and refer me back to my
ISP, fair enough?
When I phone Cobweb they reckon it is my equipment, I have tried 2 different
routers which work perfectly elsewhere to no avail.

So I am trying to migrate. As a final kick in the teeth I cannot get my MAC
code. It has been a week now, several phone calls and wasted time and I am
no nearer.

Not pleased.
Rick

Are they refusing to give you a MAC code? or are they draging their heals?
If they are refusing to issue a MAC code, then you can complain to OFCOM.

And more specifically -
http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consumeradvi...ce/switch/mac/
You'll see that your ISP must give you a MAC within 5 working days (that's
normally one week in practical terms), and it lasts for 30 days.
If you've waited over a week, it's time to get in touch with OFCOM.

Maybe they are happy to give out a MAC but wonder what a "Migration
Authorisation Code Code" is. ;-)

You don't even have to have a "PIN number"
;-)

You don't say what your "intermittent problem is".
If it's an ADSL sync problem changing your ISP
isn't going to make much difference unless you
downgrade to a lower sync speed at the same time.
Is it a 'MAX' product you have?

On the contrary, if you change to a reputable ISP such as Zen, who have good
technical support, that may be the only way to get your problem resolved.

But the OP hasn't given enough information to determine whether the
fault lies with Tiscali or the BT DSLAM and local loop (including his own
wiring).

I do agree with you that Tiscali have abysmal administrative skills
in escalating faults to BT, or even listening to what you are telling them.

All I am saying that if the link is going out of sync changing the ISP
(and all other things being equal) won't in itself solve the problem.

Speed is only half a meg.
For months now it has had days where it just wouldn't sync, then it would be
fine for a while.
During this time the ISP have claimed to make adjustments, I have had a BT
guy in who tested the line for noise and said it was fine and another guy
who tidied up the wiring in the linebox.
Currently it hasn't sync'ed for a week. The router reports speeds
alternating between 0 and 192 up and down. Noise is about 30 and attenuation
just under 40, though I don't know what this means other than at home I get
7 and 70.
Cobweb seem to be of the opinion that they have done as much as they can and
the problem is with my equipment though I have tried 3 routers all of which
work elsewhere.
My plan is to order ADSL from BT then if it doesn't work the ball is in
their court to get it sorted.
