I am replacing a Windows 98 PC, currently on a network, with a new PC
which has Windows XP Home edition installed.

Is there are way of easily transfering the network setting from the W98
to the XP machine - like a file that can be copied and pasted on the XP
machine and away we go?

I am not particularly knowledgeable on network settings and I know from
running the wizard on an XP laptop it doesn't always work :-(

What do you mean by "the network setting", Ron? What exactly do you
want to transfer?

Right out of the box, the new PC will be set up to use the TCP/IP
protocol, obtain an IP address automatically, and use the workgroup
name MSHOME. If those settings aren't right for your network, you can
change them.

I've written a web page that might help:

You shouldn't try to transfer any of the hardware
settings. XP plug and play is pretty good and the new PC
should have its own network settings.

If you mean user application settings, profiles, etc. then
look into the User state Migration Tool. (USMT).

May not come with XP home edition but look for it on the
web, or MSFT web site.

XP Home Edition and Pro both have the User State Migration Tool. To
run it, go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | File
and Settings Transfer Wizard.

Hi Steve thanks for that I'm sure that will do the trick. My concern is
really over the XP (Home) as I had a laptop with XP home that I tried to
connect to the network and some days it would, other days it wouldn't.
Or files could be transferred to the XP machine, but not away from it -
it was hell and thankfully no longer required!
