Transfering from ME to VISTA

How do I transfer files from ME to Vista? I just bought a new computer with
Vista and my old one still has ME.

You should ask in a Windows Vista newsgroup. I presume Vista has something
like XP's Files and Settings Transfer (FAST).

Share the desired folders on ME and access them from Vista.

To set up Vista for networking, go to Control Panel > Network and turn
on "Network discovery". The first time Vista discovers the network,
tell it that it's a private network.

To access ME's shared folders from Vista, click the Start button and
type the ME computer's name in the "Start Search" box in this format:

\\computer

Note that you won't be able to access Vista's shared folders from ME.

I am in the same boat. I have shared the files on my ME machine and have
turned on discovery in Vista but the ME machine never shows up on the Vista.
All the Vista machine shows in the network is itself and the router (and
since it sees the router and can go online, I know it's on the network). And
I have been able to see the Vista machine on the ME My Network places but I
cannot connect to it (I get an error).

Will the search method you list below work even though the ME machine
doesn't show up on the Vista?

I'm using Vista home premium if that matters. Thanks.

A ME machine can't show up in Vista's Network Map -- only XP and Vista
can. Is that where you're looking.

To access the ME machine from Vista, type the ME machine's name in the
Start Search box in this format:

\\computer

You can also try accessing ME in Control Panel > Network and Sharing
Center > View Computers and Devices.

To the best of my knowledge, no one has succeeded in accessing Vista's
shared folders from ME (or 95 or 98). That feature wasn't part of
Vista's design, coding, or testing. All of my attempts have resulted
in error messages or hangs in ME.

I tried typing the ME machine's name in Vista Start Search box as you
suggested, but nothing happened. And I can't see the ME machine in Vista's
Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > View Computers and Devices.

I can sometimes see the Vista machine in ME's My Network Places, but when I
double click on it to explore it, I get an error message.

I guess I'm resigned to the fact I will have to burn CDs or use flash drives
to transfer my files. Nice of MS to screw their older customers over like
this. It's not like I'm trying to connect to a Mac or something.

You're welcome, Mark.

Something should happen when you type the ME machine's name in the
Vista Start Search box preceded by two backslashes:

\\computer

It should either show ME's shared folders or give an error message.

Can you ping the ME machine from Vista, by IP address and by computer
name? If both of those fail, a firewall on ME is probably blocking
access.

Can you access the ME machine from Vista by typing ME's IP address in
the Start Search box preceded by two backslashes? For example:

\\192.168.0.101

Here's more information on accessing Vista from 95/98/ME if you want
to investigate further.

I've seen the following problems when trying to access Vista's shared
folders from 95/98/Me. I give a solution to #1 below. I'd love to
know if anyone has found a solution to #2 and #3:

1. Incompatible default network authentication protocols. Windows
95/98/Me uses LM and NTLM authentication. Vista uses NTLMv2
authentication. This causes a prompt for the IPC$ password on
95/98/Me when password protected sharing is enabled on Vista. There
is no valid response to the IPC$ prompt.

2. Incomplete enumeration of shares. 95/98/Me only sees some of
Vista's shared folders. The names of some shared folders are
truncated, making them inaccessible.

3. Instability. Accessing Vista's shared folders makes 95/98/Me hang
or crash.

If you want to try accessing Vista's shared folders from 95/98/Me, I
recommend taking these safety measures first: make a restore point on
Vista, and back up your important data on all computers.

Here's how to configure Vista to use LM and NTLM authentication to
allow access from 95/98/Me when password protected sharing is enabled.
I'd like to thank my fellow MVP Evan Pearce, who helped me understand
and test this:

1. Click the Start button, type "regedit" in the Start Search box, and
press Enter.

2. Click "Continue" in the User Account Control prompt.

3. Open this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa

4. If they don't already exist, create DWORD values named
LmCompatibilityLevel and NoLmHash.

5. Set LmCompatibilityLevel to 1.

6. Set NoLmHash to 0.

7. Restart the Vista computer.

8. Go to Control Panel > User Accounts, click "Change your password",
enter your current password in the boxes for "Current password", "New
password", and "Confirm new password", and click "Change password".

On Vista, click the Start button. The "Start Search" box appears at
the lower left corner of the menu. Type one of these in the box, then
press Enter:

The problem was the Norton firewall on the Vista. Once I turned it off, I
was able to connect to ME from using the Start Search box and transfer my
files. Thanks for your help!
