Hello
Does anyone know if there is a way of refreshing or re-building the global
catalog in the Active Directory on a Windows Domain Controller?. The reason
for this is detailed below and I really do not want to have to re-install a
new domain if I can really help it.
We have a small network of 80 users supported by a Windows 2003 Server.
Recently we had a re-shuffle of server equipment and decided to transfer the
domain controller onto a higher spec server.
What I did was install Windows 2003 Server on a new server machine and
upgraded it to a member server of the existing active directory., then I
transferred the FSMO roles from existing domain controller to the new and
also transferred the global catalog server. After the master roles and
global catalog server was completed, I demoted the existing domain
controller, leaving the new one running.
Now the problem ...
Everytime I create a new user, I get the following error ...
"Windows cannot verify that the user name is unique because the following
error occurred while contacting the global catalog: The server is not
operational. Windows will create this user account, but the user can log on
only after the user name is verified to be unique. Make sure the global
catalo is available"
Also we are having problems un-installing Microsoft Exchange Server 2003
because of an error as follows ...
"Setup encountered an error while checking pre-requisites for the component
Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services: 0XC007054B(1355):
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted"
These two errors indicate to me there seems to be a problem with the Global
Catalog server, perhaps it did not replicate any or all of the Active
Directory information before I demoted the old Domain Controller.
I've tried searching Microsoft web-site and looking on newsgroups but I
cannot find any fixes that are relevant to this problem.
The new Domain Controller is advertising itself as a global catalog server
as indicated in the Active Directory Sites and Services but somehow I feel
the data did not replicate from the old domain controller before I demoted
it.
Any help or ideas would be very much welcome.
Thank You
