Transfer of Printer Spool Files

Hello dear experts,
I am running a Server and a notebook under Windows XP in
a LAN. The Server has a Laser printer (LaserJet 1100) connected to it
which I use as network printer for the notebook.
In my network I cannot rely on the fact that the server is always
switched on and the two PCs are located on separate floors. When I
print from the notebook and the server is turned off, I get the message
that the network printer is not available. Now I have to go to the
server and switch it on. Then go
back to the notebook and start all over again.

Now I am looking for a simpler procedure which will save me the extra
trip back to the notebook and then again to the print server. My idea
was to transfer all print jobs in the Spooler of the notebook (for
example from a local print queue of the notebook) to the network
printer without going to the notebook. Any ideas?
Presently I cannot copy/move files in the spool directory
(notebook-systemroot\system32\spool\Printers) to anywhere else.
The only thing that works, is to save a print job at the notebook to a
file without the use of the spool directory. Then in a next step copy
this file at the server to the network printer. But that is kind of
complicated.
Thank you for any help.
Rolf

I forgot to mention, how the spool files in the notebook PC are
generated. Well, I defined a local printer for the notebook and then
set the port to LPT1. However, no printer is connected to this port and
the printer type is the same as for the network printer on the server.

So far one good solution was recommended to me: Allow remote access
from the server to the notebook desktop and then do the printing for
the notebook by way of the remote notebook desktop. There is good
description on how to generate a shortcut to start the remote desktop:

This makes the procedure very simple.
