Hi.
As some of you will be aware, I have set up a new network, (my first),
mostly thanks to you guys who helped me through it, not a particularly
difficult labour, but the first is always the most worrying.

With this aging and cluttered Win 98 PC in need of some colonic irrigation,
can I now transfer our working files such as "My documents" and two or three
others that we have created off of the "C" drive, (i.e. "Steve's docs" &
"B's docs etc).

I would like to transfer the folders from this Win 98 PC to The Win XP PC
which is the other PC on the network.

We have made back-ups of our working folders with Nero or incd onto RW dvd's
but we do not as yet have Nero on the XP machine.

Many thanks,

Steve.

(notice that my signature is on the last line!!)

Ignore the bit about static ip addresses if you have dhcp (router
assigned ip's) working now.

Hi Jim,

Have looked at the link.

To be honest, I have not yet given the wireless router an IP address, hence
I still cannot access it without disconnecting and booting up.

On an order of priority, I needed to enable encryption on the wireless
network first, This went pretty easy, yet not understanding to much of your
advise :-
>>>>>>>>You need to switch on encryption in the wireless access router

configuration and match the settings and passphrase on the pc
configuration.

It will be easier if you let winxp deal with the wireless pc.

Choose WPA-PSK preferably with AES which uses the rijndael block
cipher rather than TKIP which is based on the RC4 stream cipher and is
a beefed up version of its maligned predecessor WEP.

If you don't have these options listed, you need to go to the wireless
router's website for a firmware upgrade. You may also have to visit
the microsoft site for a winxp upgrade.<<<<<<<<<<

........ I went for 64-bit WEP, typed in a passphrase and took the first key
generated to enter on the wireless PC.

I have also disabled "SSID" broadcast on the router as a belt and braces.

Have posted back on my original thread as I would like to try to understand
a bit more about configuring the two routers.

Many thanks.

Steve

That encryption's easily breakable using freely available utilities
(try googling for airsnort).

However, there are enough completely open wireless networks around to
tempt the passing hacker that your weak encryption will probably be
sufficient deterrent.

Not recommended though.

Thanks Jim

I take it the link is saying that the two PC's need to be configured the
same in order be able to transfer files etc.

The network has been working fine for a week or so now and we are able to
share files on both and work and save doc's etc on to the other PC ok.

I set-up this win 98 PC for tcp/ip and I guess the win xp was already on it.

I asked at work today (the network man), and he explained the I could drag
and drop from PC to PC or cut/copy and paste if I preferred.

Is there any more I need to know.

Many thanks

Steve.

That's pretty much it. Bear in mind that newer (xp) machines will
communicate in a different way to older (98) machines. As long as you
have the 98 machine on your network or you want to use browsing, you
must have netbios enabled to share files/printers whereas xp machines
can communicate without netbios. Read this.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/204279

As you will see, the netbios ports are 137-139 with 445 for direct.
It's quite a common problem with broken networks that a misconfigured
or misfiring firewall blocks these ports. This will be one of the
first things to look at (along with checking your wireless) when it
all goes pear shaped.

You can still detect the network and find out the SSID anyway, but it
makes life just a little bit harder for the passing hacker. Encryption
is much more important. You can also look at entering the mac number
of your wireless network card into the wireless router configuration
so that only registered devices can use the router wirelessly. This is
also spoofable but is another hurdle for the bad guy to cross.

Type "ipconfig /all" at a command prompt. The mac code is the 6 number
sequence listed as physical address eg. 00-11-50-44-17-22.

Hello james.......
I went to the site you provided and found that the Advertising is covering
the article...... shame, it looked like a keeper.
