Hi,

I have a satellite connection to the internet. Upload is being done
through dialup while the download is through satellite. The pc which
is thus connected to the internet is "192.168.0.1".

I have a linux squid proxy "192.168.0.2". All client pc browse through
this proxy.

I have a small lan network will all windows client pcs and linux
machine pointing to 192.168.0.1 for gateway.

When I setup proxy on the clients, immediately the messenger apps
start giving me trouble, yahoo games has a lot of problems with this
setup.

What I want is for all the messenger traffic to go to the gateway. I
suspect that currently this traffic doesn't go to the gateway, because
of proxy settings, and instead goes to ubuntu.

Is there anyway where I can redirect all messenger traffic going to
192.168.0.2 and instead route it to 192.168.0.1 so it goes through
dialup?

Regards

Ali

Hi Ali,

IMHO, the problem is because you are trying to do "transparent
proxying" and you have got a variety of apps that get affected
(confused) due to this traffic redirection.
Just check if all the ports required by your client apps can be
redirected, and your client apps don't mind such redirection.
And better still try using ipvsadmin instead of iptables nat rules, my
guess is it might work out better.

In fact all microsoft i.e. based apps are pretty crazy. Did you know
that you must additionally tell i.e. to use HTTP 1.1. when proxy is
configured. So just be very careful when you plan to "transparent
proxy" apps that are not destined for pure http - port 80.
