Tracking down invalid automount attempts

Is there any way to track down what processes are attempting to mount
invalid nfs mounts through the automounter? This is being seen both with
the stock install of RHEL4 and CentOS 4.3. Some executables seem to be
attempting to access file paths that had been retired. I'm just not sure
how to track down the culprits though.
