Tracing IP to owners hometown?

Hi!

How does some websites manage to trace my IP down to which town i live in?
I've tried "whois" but that only tells me my ISP's address.

Each IP is part of a larger netblock. And each netblock has a clearly
identified owner, available via whois.

These IP->hometown 'technologies' that are popping up simply use a table to
map netblock to city. Someone has spent the time doing a little research.

And they are not reliable. I tried one of them with one of my servers in
London UK and it said it was in Israel.

Yes, very unreliable: ISPs go in and out of business, taking their blocks
with them. Also, when an ISP gets on a blacklist for spamming, etc., he
has to drop that block or reassign it. If you look through the NANAE
NGs, you will see what I mean.
