Toshiba WiFi Using Mini-PCI?

Hi,

I have a Toshiba Satellite 2455-S305. The PDF Brochure claims there
is a Mini-PCI slot for WiFi, but gives no further info (except to
contact Toshiba to have it installed. I did, and they told me they no
longer offer this service.)

I am interested in installing a Mini-PCI WiFi card. I do not know
what they are worth, or which to buy, but it seems logical to buy a
tri-band card, no? (A,B and G) Although if there is such a huge
difference in price, I may settle for just a a/b card, or even if much
much cheaper, just a B. Again, I do not know enough to make this
decision.

Also, I am not entirely sure where this slot is. But after reading
numerous other posts, I gather it's underneath the keyboard. So I
checked, and I think I may have found it - I see a piece of tape with
both a Grey and White wire and what looks like a small slot (very
roughly - 2 1/2" wide x 2" long)?

Are there different size Mini-PCI cards, or are they all the same
dimensions, fitting into the slot on all brand of laptops (IBM,
Toshiba, Dell, etc.)?

Also, does it matter what brand I buy? Will any no-name Mini-PCI card
work? (Because I found, on eBay, one for $35ish -
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=45003)

Basically:

1) What kind of Card should I get (In terms of price, useablility,
etc.)?
2) Where exactly is this Mini-PCI slot on my 2455-S305 laptop?
3) Does Brand of Laptop matter?
4) Are all Mini-PCI Cards the same?

PLEASE also send any responce emailed to (remove the "nospam"):
(E-Mail Removed)

Thanks so much in advance!!

Watch the line wrap -

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=mi...4ax.com&rnum=3

Your owner's manual will show you where the cover plate is for the
mini-PCI slot.

Please remove the spamtrap to email me.

The question isn't "are there weapons of mass destruction?",
the question is "who has them now?"

I have a Toshiba tablet PC which came with an 802.11b only mini-pci.
I replaced it with a Dell Truemobile 1400 802.11a/b/g card. Card
works well. If you hit the Dell forums on their website, look in the
networking section. There's a few posters in there who have taglines
in their signature that have all the parts numbers and the 800 number
to order from. The mini-pci isn't something you can get through their
normal channels. Took me a couple days to work through their system
even though I had the part number. But they have the updated info in
their signatures, so you shouldn't have any problem.

Cost to me was about $75. Well worth it.

You can get a D-Link DWL-520+ Wireless Desktop PCI card (or the 802.11g
equivalent) and open it up to remove the mini-pci card within. This is
what I did to replace the flakey Truemobile mini-pci card in my Dell
Inspiron 8200. I can't comment on the hardware for the Toshiba, but when
you open up the D-Link housing you will see where the small cable for
the antenna is attached so you can attach the same from the Toshiba.

Just make sure you install the D-Link drivers and software before
connecting the hardware.

It's really quite easy.

A 802.11g or b Card, because the antenna in your notebook should work at
2.4GHz, not at 5GHz. (I guess...)
(I think that there is a antenna connected to the grey& white wire.)
At the moment I work with a D-Link DWL-520+, soon upgrading to a 802.11g
Card.

I think, you found it.

Mini-PCI ist mostly the same.

No. But I don´t know a different type of WLAN-Card.
There are for example also Modem- Cards in the PCI- Spec.

Also, I was wondering if anyone knew whether this card will do:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=45001

It says "Don't need any antenna as it is built-in." - but can I use
the antenna from my Toshiba 2455-S305 (the grey and white wires), and
most importantly, there is a switch on the left side of my computer to
turn wifi on/off - will that work with this card?

Despite what the seller writes, the card itself does not have a built-in
antenna. (!) It is your your laptop that must have built-in antenna leads.
You connect your laptop's built-in antenna leads to the card. It doesn't
matter which antenna lead goes to which connector on the card either.
The Wi-Fi on/off switch on your laptop may or may not switch the card on/off.
Be sure to upgrade your laptop BIOS to the latest version before giving up
on the Wi-Fi on/off switch. In Windows XP you can always enable/disable
the card in network connections.

There's a good chance the switch won't work with it. I've tried three
different mini-pci cards when I replaced the one in my Toshiba 3500,
and the switch didn't function for any of them.

My toshiba, however, came with a fantastic app called "network device
switch" that lets me save profiles for different cards and networks,
so I can change settings, which network cards are active, etc, all
with a simple click on the tray icon. Did your Toshiba come with that
as well? If so, it makes it even easier than going into the network
control panel to enable/disable the device.

Otherwise, as another poster noted, you can disable it in the network
section of control panel.

It works for me and my noname Notebook, with the DWL-520+ it didn´t work.
Just test it.
