Tosh Satellites and PC cards

I have recently acquired one of these laptops. Operating Sys is win xp pro,
Tosh installed I think.

I have been trying to install an intel pro / wireless 2011 lan pc card.

The install seems to fail in that the card is 'seen' but all options are
greyed out.

The manuals refer to a Tosh specific mini pci card

Questions:
To use wireless is the Tosh mini pci card the only option ?
If PC cards are generally acceptable how best to install either intel or
D-link cards ?

I note that the Tosh mini-pci card seems to need some patches to work.
Does this apply to pc cards ?

In what ways is the pci card a preferable solution to the pc card ?

Thank you

I don't know of any pci cards that will install in a laptop!

Hi john

I use a Tosh Sat Pro too, with the MINI PCI card option, I do not have a
MINI PCI card installed, but have succesfully managed to install the
following WiFi Lan cards

Belkin 54G
SMC 2635W
Senao NL 2511CD plus
Dlink 610
X-Com 325
and another that I cant remember what it was.. came out of a Access Point
made by 3Com..

So I guess you CAN use whatever you want as long as XP/manufacturer has the
drivers available.

THE only problem I have had was with the Senao Card, as I had to go to the
device manager and "update" the driver, and point to the driver CD for its
drivers, re-started the machine, and Hey presto'

I guess that ANY PCMCIA (16bit/32bit) Slot "should" accept a WiFi Card
(16/32 bit)

Try looking in Device manager.. you may find an exclamation mark..
You did install as "Administrator rights" didnt you?

Regards
Alan

PS... f/fgeorge, nor do I..

Thanks guys

The manual refers to the PCI card as a factory fit or dealer fit.

The web site lists prices as follows:

Wireless LAN PC Card £65 PA3064U-1PCC
Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card £85 PA3212U-2MPC

I suspect the pci card is an internal.
There is a switch on the side turning wireless on and off (for hospitals
they say)
Does anybody know if this only applies to the pci card or does it turn off
wireless via a pc card as well ?

Ta

Do you have the current XP drivers for this card? Did you follow the
installation instructions? You may have to install the software prior to
inserting the card.

You can use either the mini PCI card or a PCMCIA card. Follow the
instructions for the specific card you purchase.

Either require most current drivers.

No messing with additional cards to carry around. Leaves both PCMCIA slots
available for other cards.

Why wouldn't you just use the mini PCI card already installed in your
computer? BTW, Don't forget to turn the mini PCI card on. The switch on my
satellite pro 6100 is on the left side of the computer.

Hi John

With prices as low as $15 in the west and £20 in the UK,, far cheaper to get
Card than Mini PCI installed..
(e-bay)
You can just pull out the PCMCIA, or if the software lets you, disable the
radio.
The advantage of the Mini PCI card over the PCMCIA card, is that there is
nothing to catch the thing whilst on the move/putting in bag etc...

Yes the Mini PCI card is an internal jobbie.. you could install it yourself
seems like an easy job to me by looking at the slot, and on my Sat Pro, the
switch for it is next to the volume control.

Hope we have been some help

Alan

Thanks

UK supplies do not have the mini-pci fitted as standard.
It is an option.

My questions were to help me evaluate the option.

Cheers
