Tortoise vs. Hare

Have an Orinoco Gold card and Orinoco BG-2000 gateway that scream along with
fast throughput from our DSL connection.

Am visiting in-laws, who have Linksys BEFW11S4 and Linksys WPC11 V.4 card
(both with latest drivers and firmware). I brought my laptop along
(identical Dell to theirs), but it has a hopelessly slow throughput from the
Internet, although wireless connection is excellent. I have tried both
laptop connections with WEP enabled and disabled, but no difference. The
Linksys-to-Linksys connection is fast, but the Orinoco-to-Linksys connection
is almost at a halt.

Any ideas what may be causing this anomaly and what to do about it?

Now, I have noticed that the problem mentioned in my earlier post is
directly related to distance from the gateway. The Linksys card connects
and has proper flow at normal distances from the Linksys gateway, but my
Orinoco card will only function if it is literally right next to the
gateway, like within one foot. As soon as I moved ten feet away, the web
pages just stall and sit there.

Does anybody have any idea what may be causing this and what to check out or
do?
