Has anyone in Toronto, Ontario, Canada tried running a public wireless
access point? Did people use it? Any experiences to share?

Oh, yes, people certainly do use "public" wireless access points in
Toronto. It's making the news:

Well, other than the perverts :-)

That was more a case of war-driving than using a public access point.

Perhaps -- but if *you* were running a public access-point, what would
you do to prevent your facilities from being used in this manner?
(And what would you do about the related problem of people using
stolen credit card numbers?)

Make them register before using it.

Credit card verification matched with MAC address (although both can be
fooled). I'd probably encrypt everything through a proxy on the web so I
wouldn't get sued for what anyone does.
