If I wanted to look at setting up a wireless broadband service in a small
village, whose houses are dominated by small valleys and wooded hillsides,
I¹d obviously be daft.

So, given I¹m daft, does anyone know where one can get (for free) small
parts of OS maps in a topographical form so we could so some basic line of
sight estimates.

I could use a pen and pencil but that seems so twentieth century.

Anyone have any good sources ?

If Auto Route came with your Windows package, take a look at your village on
that. Somewhere around the top right of the map page will be a drop down
box, one option will show the undulations of the landscape.

Other options might be to check out multimap.com

You should also be able to view Ordnance Survey maps of your area in your
local library & council offices ( they have ones on public display to show
all the public footpaths)

If you do try to start a scheme, broadband access in the countryside has
become a political issue ---- new businesses in rural areas do need modern
telecommunications, you might find support from various rural groups and
even government.

I was going to say 'The Ministry Of Agriculture', but it has had several
name changes recently --- try this link
http://www.countryside.gov.uk/index.htm

A satellite connection might also be an option, -- check out this site for
the recently launched "Eutelsat" and view the list of UK suppliers.
