Take a 1GB file and copy it from one computer to another over the switch...
Time how long it takes. Do the math and you'll have your estimated
bandwidth.

Cheers!

In most cases we just go by the switche's capacity. If it's a 100meg switch,
and the light is lit at 100, as well as the indicator in the NIC's
properties, then that is what it will attempt to use. Switches are pretty
good at isolating traffic to the source and destination ports and therefore
the rest of the network will not see that traffic.

Some installations use their own built speed tester for internal traffic
tests, such as Rutgers:
DCS Bandwidth Testing. A server-side program for measuring end-to-end
bandwidth between a client and our bandwidth-measuring server has been
installed ...

Otherwise, commercially, you can probably try:
Bandwidth Monitoring with Netflow

Maybe someone else would know of other utilities.

I hope that helps.

While it doesn't show bandwidth "available", I use DU Meter from
www.dumeter.com for testing actual transfer speeds. 'Very inexpensive, and
allows you to select whatever interface on the computer you want, (net
card - individual or multiple, download and upload speed, inbits or bytes,
and more). I've found it to be extremenly accurate in multiple test
comparisons.
