Depends, have you got a USB modem or an Ethernet router?

Is there not a wee icon in the taskbar down the bottom .Is there a
power plug on the back of the modem or a phone line plug .You can
always go in to Network Connections in Control Panel and disable the
connection .I'm sure there are other ways tho .

Don't you have a firewall or do you just suffer from paranoia :-)

Unless you have taken precautions such a decent firewall and anti trojan
software then you are just as much at risk when you are using the machine.

They can't if the PC's off ! Stop worrying.

You ARE running a proper firewall, not the useless Windows one aren't you?

Your router have timing functions, but they will not help you control
the "phoning home" as any peice of soaftware that needed to "phone
home" as you put it would simply wait until an internet connection was
established.

My router is on a remote controlled power socket so I flick it off if I
am out for a few hours. Alternatively I can right click my zone alarm
icon and click "Stop all internet activity"
I also turn off my flat screen monitor to save energy.
We only turn off our PCs overnight (unless downloading) since we believe
booting once once a day is quite enough.

Some routers have a schedule capability so you can set on and
off for certain hours.
If you P2P your IP address is exposed unless you use one
of the free public VPN servers, network activity can
continue for some while, unless you close both the client
and the VPN connection.
As for call homes, best is to block access at your firewall,
but this doesn't work if the program has to reach the vendors
server for updates, like anti-virus and spyware programs.
Many programs automaticall check for updates, this you
can block at your forewall.
