Tiscali up and down speeds the same

I have a 256k ADSL Tiscali UK account, and all the speedtest results
from various websites show that my download and upload speeds are
almost the same at around 250kbps.
This is actually true because I sometimes use KaZaa, and have had up
and downloads at the same time showing around 30.0 on their display.

I have always been led to believe that ADSL works on the principle
that uploads are half the speed of downloads, but this is obviously
not the case in my connection.

Have other Tiscali users found the same thing, or am I unique?

The upload speed is usually lower than the download speed - that is
because connecting/browsing was generally a one-way street. The ADSL
used inthe UK generally has an upload speed of 256Kbps, irrespective
of the download speed. You have the slower download speed which
matches your upload speed. Those with 2Mbps download also have
256Kbps upload.

In France I have a system which is 128Kbps upload and 1Mbps download -
so it clearly varies between Countries.

if you had a 150k account you may find that you get 256k up and 150k
down.

You connection is probably 2M downstream / 256k upstream, so it is
asymmetric (it might be 512k/256k - look at the modem stats). Over
that connection you are provided with a crippled service where Tiscali
throttle you to 256k downstream.

So you have an asymmetric connection delivering a symmetrical service
:-)
