Tiscali to TalkTalk, Whats the deal?

Having just arrived home after a fw weeks away, I have been told that
TalkTalk (TT) have been phoning me, presumably to offer me this new deal
they are offering old Tiscali(T) customers now we are part of the TT group.

Problem is I don't know what to do. As I really have no idea of the
implications of saying yes to TT, and moving the whole phone line over to
them. This situation is one I have always tried to avoid in the past, due
to various stories I have heard through the years, but it seems I am now
faced with this situation myself.

I want to know if TT will be starting me off on a new contract if I move the
phone line over to them and what this contract time will be?

I have always avoided this line takeover, but now it seems that if I stay
with TT for broadband, but stay with BT for the line, they are going to rip
me off for my broadband by upping the monthly cost by 6 pounds.

I have to say that I was one of th people who was happy with Tiscali, having
been with them for several years getting good speeds and a reliable
connection.

If I move over, will I still be able to use 18185? Does anyone know if TT
are controlling bandwidth on torrent files? Is there a download limit?

I really don't know what I am going to say to TT when they call me again
about this change. I wonder if anyone has any advice.

Thanks

I've been with TT for broadband for 18 months - contract has just
expired and they phoned me to renew it - which I did after a bit of
haggling. Initially they wanted me to sign up to an 18 month contract
but got it down to 12 months with half price broadband for 3 months
and some discount (25% I think) off calls to mobiles.

You'll read all kinds of stories about how crap they are but they've
been fine with me and everyone I know who uses them. Cost is about £18
for line rental plus broadband plus free local calls all the time plus
free national calls (inc 0870/0845) evening & weekends. For an extra
£4 you can get national daytime calls thrown in, and for £2 extra you
can get half price mobile calls which probably makes them cheaper than
18185.

They have a download limit of 40Gb a month but you can up it to 80Gb
for (IIRC) £4 extra - but as they fine you £5 if you go above 40Gb
it's only worth paying the extra £4 if you're going to go above 40Gb
every month.

You'll probably find it's considerably cheaper and less hassle than
pissing around using BT for line rental, 18185 for calls and someone
else for broadband. If you have a line problem they'll probably send a
BT engineer out anyway (they did with me).

Plusnet also do all-in-one deals with phoneline, calls and BB. They may
be worth a look.

What I would do is:
Keep your BT line for voice.
Get a MAC from Tiscali/Talk Talk.
Get broadband from a good ISP (compare ISPs at www.thinkbroadband.com ).
There are some good deals out there if you look, some of which come with
good, UK-based customer service.
It's up to you, of course...

I just moved the phone and broadband to IDNET. saved a bloody fortune. I
am sure that I COULD have done it with BT, but they had so many effing
friends and family, business only blah this blah that.

Idnet said £8.70 a month, plus calls (most are incoming: I pay about £2
a month over that) and pick your broadband option, ad its a quid a gig
over the limit if you exceed it.

All in English too. Never fail to listen, talk the same language that I
do. No stupid waiting while some massive phone system bounces you from
India to outer Mongolia and back to Scotland by way of Fiji, Tonga and
the outer Hebrides.

Bloody wonderful Everything online at one supplier, direct debit proper
e-mailed billings, and no throttling or crap if I exceed my bandwidth. I
just pay extra at a fair rate.

Why couldn't BT do the same?

Too busy spending money on a bloody soap opera about an ill matched
couple finding ways to make BT enhance their sex life.

Pah!

I am sure taltalk would be 0.0001% cheaper. Until it didn't work, and I
spent three weeks of my life saying 'yes I have removed everything,
Kraftee, I really have I am plugged direct into the socket you anally
retentive script bashing uneducated tosser.'

Life. sometimes, is simply too short.

ISTR the PlusNet deal is very similar to TT, PlusNet are a little
cheaper but don't include local calls.

BT for line rental & 1899.com for 5p national daytime calls - doesn't
really cost us much hassle at all. And used right includes free BT
caller display. And it leaves money to pay for a decent ISP (BeThere).

Simple answer really, JUMP, while you have got the chance and are FREE
to do so, as an ex-Tiscali customer, I can honestly say, that if you
shop around and choose wisely, you should get a better service and save
some money.

For me being a long standing Sky customer, as soon as my 12 month
Tiscali contract was up, I switched to Sky Broadband, and it was a
seemless and faultless change over. Been happy ever since, I have only
had two outages in approx two years, one was planned due to BT working
at the exchange, the other lasted about 2 hours or so. Apart from that
brilliant!

Best Wishes

Gaz.
