Tiscali, Sagem Modem and WinXP

Hi,
I'm writing again for my neighbour because he can't get on-line.
I wrote here a week or so ago about his Sagem Modem problems and got
some helpful replies but the problems still exist. He's contacted
Tiscali for a new modem.
The only way he's overcome the obstacles to on-line access in the past
is by re-installing WinXP. This has got to be close to the ultimate in
shotgun type remedies, although I suppose he could buy a new computer
as well. :-)

Reinstalling WinXP did work though, probably because the area of the OS
that deals with on-line activity was refreshed.
So, please can anyone tell me which are the components of WinXP
assocoated with this problem and how he can replace just those, without
going for the complete WinXP re-install?.
Regards,
Mike

It may be worth trying "XP TCP/IP Repair". Some spyware/adware is know to
mess up, or even hijack, internet connectivity. Whilst I have never had to
resort to using this. I have read good reports about its capability of
"mending" TCP/IP problems.

Thanks Mike, your reply seems spot-on as far as my understanding of the
siuation goes. I'm pretty sure this problem has arisen because the
computer has been exposed to attack from the Internet. I'll suggest my
neighbour tries the software you recommend.
Might an uninstall/reinstall of the WinXP TCPIP components have a
similar effect?

Regards,
Mike

Yes, my guess is a reinstall of XP would have the same effect in the short
term. Clearly, if it has been compromised in some way, a good search by
the likes of Adaware and other anti spy software would be useful in
cleaning the system, else it will keep encountering the same problems.

I'm not sure what your problem was - but I originally had problems with
my Sagem, ande still do sometimes. The green icon triangle just
disappeared after booting the computer. The only way being to re-boot,
and not connect until it turned green again. Sometimes I have had to
re-boot twice or very occasionally 3 timeswhen the icon has disappeared
Once connected though, its ok.

Why didn't you/he back up the system whilst it was working? Its a simple 5
minute job, that would have saved hours of messing around re-installing the
opertaing system. He would also be strongly advised to get antivirus
software and install a firewall software package (zonealarm should do the
trick).
