I can't connect to the internet in the evening without pulling the
phone plug and answer machine from the filter. Consequently I can't
use the phone while online. This only happens in the evening, I don't
have this problem during the day. I've also noticed that this problem
occurs if the telephone is not in use. If I'm on the telephone I can
connect to the internet but when I
put the receiver down, I get disconnected. I'm very mystified. If it
is a bandwidth problem because of number of users in the evening I
would have thought that a telephone in use would put on extra load on
the system than a telephone not in use. Yet when my phone is not in
use I can't connect.

Probably you have a HR connection (the current flow during the
teleplhine call is enough to 'make' the circuit) this could also be
the cause of the evening problems when it could be causing an
excessive drop in your SNR.

You have 2 ways of approaching the problem..

A) If you're feeling brave go straight to BT & complain about a noisy
line but do not say anything about DSL, even to the engineer who
visits.

B) Go to Tiscali & badger them into getting an engineering visit
raised

B is the proper/correct way to go but it could take you sometime in
getting them to raise the visit (they get charged for the visit)

Thank you you sound like you know what you are talking about, more so
than the tech support at Tiscali who want to send me yet another filter.

It will take at least an hour of on the telephone badgering to get them to
do this, and it might take about three lots of 1hour calls. Tiscali have one
of the worst customer services.

Tiscali sent me a new modem and filter which I fitted yesterday and I
was not disconnected for the first time in weeks last night.
