The Times reports that Tiscali not quite dead yet, although it may be
thought of as having one foot in the grave and the other one on a wet
bar of soap

I suppose people have to speak as they find.

My daughter takes her broadband from Tiscali , and other than the
almighty fuck-up when trying to get it set up, it's worked fine since.

Likewise for me. My ISP is Sky, I think I pay about a tenner a month
and achieve download speeds of around 12Mbit/s and other than one or
two slight problems early on and the failure of a router, then my
service has been remarkably trouble free (I expect to regret saying
that)

I too am with Sky, on the max package (16mb - £10 per month). Upon getting
Sky broadband I too was having problems for a couple of days, but that
turned out to be my internal wiring not being great. Once I snipped the
bell wire on the extension cable it was 100%. Since then, not had any real
problems. I cannot really fault Sky BB. I personally think it is a cheap
good product.

I think it's generally true that a few whiners can make an awful lot of
noise whereas a huge heap of satified customers tend to be very quiet on
forums/usenet. Consequently, the opinions read on-line may well not be
representative of the % of dissatisfied customers. Also, the bigger the
customer base, the greater the apparent dissatisfaction, even if on a
percentage basis they're no worse than any other company.

Based on this premise, I *didn't* absolutely forbid my mother from migrating
to talktalk. She's now been without a phoneline or broadband since the 26th
of Feb when her system was supposed to go "live". Which just goes to show,
sometimes the whiners are right. :-(

I was with the Nildram part of Tiscali, and it was great until they
tried doing some kind of upgrade, when it all went tits up.

I suspect that they haven't enough technical staff left to sort out
problems, so if you never get a probem, you're ok, but if/when one
happens, you're screwed.

It wouldn't surprise me if this was the case, because if I was a
techie there, I'd certainly have taken any chance of alternate
employment that came my way.

I think it was always so with Tiscali, but here it has for the most
part been absolutely fine - I have no reason to move.

A lot of them know no better and haven't seen what's possible.

I'm with Sky. It's the only ISP I have had NO problems with.

I'm just about to move from Freedom2Surf (Tiscali) because of their new
NNTP port blocking policy (which they call traffic management but with
zero data transfer). I'm not a high bandwidth user of any Internet
service and port blocking has only been in place for the past 6/8 weeks.
Prior to this I was reasonably satisfied with my F2S account.

It appears to me that as the F2S infrastructure is being incorporated
into the main Tiscali network the service is deteriorating rapidly. As
Tiscali is going t**s-up the situation is unlikely to get any better.

I was having a discussion about this with someone where I work and he
was commenting about the poor service he has been getting on his
"Toucan" broad-band since Christmas. Who now owns Toucan?

That is no reason to leave them. They are plenty of news servers out there
that do work without moving ISP.
