A friend of mine joined Tiscali 15months ago. about 3 months ago he got a
letter from them telling him something was wrong with his account and a bill
for £119. It seems they couldnt get the money from his account but waited
for over a year before doing anything. Due to the terms and conditions the
account should have been suspended after 30 days. Will I have to pay all
this back money all at once. They are extremely unhelpfull and keep telling
him to e-mail people..But he cant due to his account being suspended. They
also wont remove the ADSL from his line and say they can even charge him for
this while its being sorted out. Anyone have any ideas what he can do.

Thanks

You won't have to pay any money, but your friend will. Tell "him" to
contact them and ask if "he" can pay in installments.

Send a letter to them by recorded delivery setting out in calm terms what
has happened. Address it to the MD and mark the envelope Private &
Confidential.

Try uk.legal if all else fails - it seems wrong that they can suspend his
account yet still claim to be able to charge for use of their service -
they`re not providing one !

If he had the service until recently, they _are_ allowed to charge him
for the use he`s had - and IIRC can do so up to six years after the debt
was last acknowledged, but it would seem unreasonable to demand payment
all at once for an error caused by their systems.

East Midlands Electricity did it to me once. They failed to bill me for over
a year then demanded payment in one lump sum. They even accused me of
denying access to their meter reader which is impossible as all 150
properties here share a communal meter shed.

Better to mark it Personal and Confidential.

Not that it will do any good Peter, Tiscali UK is the company that
was once called Localtel can't think of the ISP side of the companies
name it then became something else before being acquired by Tiscali my
point being going right back to the Localtel days "this" company has
always had billing problems mainly caused by incompetent staff. I am
inclined to think judging by the horror stories I have read here that
Tiscali UK is still being mainly run by staff from " The old
vicarage".

It then went to Worldonline before Tiscali bought it

I had a similar thing with BT - signed up with them a couple of
years ago, with surftime etc, and an option where I paid about
£30 a month and all calls to landlines off peak were free. I then
went away for a week and a bit, whilst my girlfriend didn't
realise it was only off peak, and ran up a bill of £300 in one
month! Went onto incoming calls, yet BT insisted the only way to
stop being charged £30 every month until the debt was paid off
was to cancel the whole account.

Your mate might want to ask Tiscali to cancel his account, to
avoid paying for something he can't use and then sign up with
another provider, but I can imagine them not being keen to supply
a MAC
