Anyone else having problems with the Tiscali News Server.
Appears to be down at present.

It has been down since the 10th or 11th.

The Tiscali one is dire at the best of times, consequently I
haven't used it for years.
Use a third-party one such as
news.motzarella.org, you need to sign up on their website, it's free.

Bonus is it lets you use port 443 with SSL.
You will no doubt be aware that Tiscali are not averse to blocking
traditional Usenet port 119 traffic at peak times.

What you are seeing is traffic shaping on the NNTP port. Freedom2Surf
(aka Tiscali) claim they don't block ports but any reduction in
throughput is down to data throttling. For me traffic from any news
server goes to zero on port 119 for around 5 or 6 hours each evening.

I've requested a MAC and F2S in reply suggest that I sign up for a 12
month contract with another 3 months free!

It's a weekday evening - that's normal service.

I couldn't even get 443 to work on APN on weekday evenings.

A MAC provided the solution.

Are you downloading binaries?

I connect to a news server every ten minutes. Looking at the logs,
since Monday there has been one connection failure.

No, half a dozen low bandwidth text only groups

Tiscali have been blocking traffic through my exchange every evening for
the past 2 months.

Tiscali's own forum (above) would be a good place to complain.
