Tiscali DNS Servers

Is there a fault with these this morning. I've just been to sort out
someones problems on their PC and discovered that although he had access
to email he could not gain access to any web sites. All his settings
seem to be correct. The DNS addresses are allocated by the ISP so I do
not know the addresses. Does anyone have the details, and also perhaps
some alternatives.

You could try OpenDNS on:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Try the websites using the dotted quad IP address, this bypasses
the DNS lookup to get the IP address.
Use ping, pathping or a traceroute utility to see where it goes
pearshaped, in some cases your local router is configured
as the DNS address.

It depends whether it is an ADSL modem, wireless setup, what type of
firewall and if a HOSTS list is being used, or something like Peer Guardian.
There was nothing wrong with the DNS servers today.
Give your friend the address to this group, set up his news server - then we
can help him directly and you might learn a thing or two from him along the
way.

Thank you for your reply, and also everyone else that have offered
information.

The 'friend' is in his 80's, and would struggle with this newsgroup. His
knowledge of computing being very limited. He calls me round about every
2 months to sort out his latest problems, most of which tend to be
altered/incorrect settings. He is rather short sighted and I suspect
most - if not all - of his problems are 'operator error'.

He is using a Sagem ADSL modem, and the WinXP built in firewall. I do
not know whether a HOSTS list is being used.
