Tiscali Broadband keeps dropping

I have had Tiscali 2Mb Broadband for several months now running without any
problems but since yesterday, the connection keeps dropping (the ADSL light
starts flashing on the Speedtouch modem), and later reconnecting every 5-10
minutes. I have tried
everything the help pages suggest (e.g disconnect everything, wait 60 secs,
reboot etc) and have changed the filter. The phone always has a dial tone
but the BB error is "there is no dial tone". BT have checked the line and it
is ok.

Any suggestions before I take out a bank loan to cover the 0871 tech support
call?

Thanks but have already tried that. Tiscali have moved all billing/support
numbers to a single 0871 one since August and none of the saynoto0870
alternatives work now.

Firstly, the "no dial-tone" message is a red herring.
Windows typically uses DUN (dial-up networking)
to initiate the connection using a USB modem,
and DUN does not have a more appropriate error
message in its repertoire for this kind of ADSL failure.

The first thing you need to do is eliminate your own
equipment and phone wiring.

You mention 'the phone' and 'the filter' so am
I right to assume that you have only a master
socket in your home, with a filter plugged
into it, and a phone and modem plugged directly
into the filter? Or are things more complex than
that?

Yes - a very simple setup. One phone socket, one modem, one phone, one
filter. I have changed the filter and phone cable.

I am using Win XP SP2 with Windows Firewall.

couple (well, 3 really) of things for you to try..
unplug the phone and see if problems continue, if all ok, get a new phone!
unscrew the faceplate from the BT box, and plug the modem into the socket
that was hidden. this give a more reliable connection than the one used
presently.
try another modem, perhaps borrow one from a friend /neighbour
if neither of these fixes it, i leave it to the experts on this forum to
assist further

oh, and a 4th suggestion, when all is well (or even before), dump tiscali
for someone who doesnt charge in pints of blood for support on a service
they provide and charge for.

good luck

Don't they do email support, or have a support newsgroup even ?

Paid 'support' for fault reporting is a massive scam IMHO.
