Tiscali ADSL at 2.2mbps?

A customer of mine shows 2.2mbps when she connects to Tiscali ADSL using a
standard Alcatel Speedtouch modem and consumer connection for which she is
paying only £19.99 per month. Strangely the connection does seem to be at
512kbps for file transfer etc.

Is this normal? Specific for Tiscali? A test? I've heard of 2+mbps
connections in mainland Europe, but not in the UK.

I don't have much experience with ADSL, but how is the modem connected to
the computer?

The PC could be measuring the connection speed between the PC and the modem,
and not the modem and the internet

Just a thought..

This is to do with the service Tiscali are using to provide the ADSL and
it's a bugger to migrate from if they decide to change ISP. Can't
remember the exact details, but the guys in uk.telecom.broadband will
give you chapter and verse on it. Suffice to say, she only has 0.5Mbps
bandwidth, the cap is managed differently to the standard BT Wholesale
ADSL that most ISPs use.

2MB ADSL lines are available in the UK - faster than that is very rare
though.

Its normal for some ISP's (including Tiscali) as they use something called
BT DataStream for their ADSL services - as opposed to BT IPStream that most
ISP's use.

With BT DataStream, the cost of an ADSL line (to an ISP) is the same,
regardless of whether a 512K, 1MB or 2MB is installed - so Tisali ask BT to
install a 2MB line and then employ throttling to cap the speed to "correct"
speed - hence your customers modem sees it connecting at 2MB

Regards
Sunil

Tiscali are crap... Never trust what the connecton speed is... Best to post
to uk.telecom.broadband

One way to test the true speed, is going here...
