Hello Team,

Could someone tell me what are timers in networks ?

for instance what are TCP timers? my netstat -o generates output :-

Active Internet connections (w/o servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
Timer
tcp 0 0 smoothwall-or.:webcache 172.18.101.1:4812
TIME_WAIT timewait (42.62/0/0)

Now i really want to know what this timer is and what it means!!

Could someone help me?

Thanks a lot

Sidharth

It says the tcp connection to your proxy server will be closed in
about 42.62 seconds it's in TIME_WAIT status. Dunno about those
0/0, the docs seem to be incomplete.

watch the word wrap:::

but in short, timers are a part of the driver/IP stack that controls when
things happen. Things such as "while I haven't heard any data from you in
a while, I'll let you know I'm still here by sending an ACK packet"

my explanation is by no means complete, hence the 2nd url...do a find for
'timer' on that page.
