I've worked on this network that has set up as its authoritative time
server a DC that has none of the 5 operations master roles. I'm just
wondering how that can be, as in every documentation that I've read so
far the PDC emulator is king in this respect. I found this out by
running "net time" on a fresh 2kPro workstation that was not tweaked in
any way. It just discovered the authoritative time server in its
parent domain, which is what it should do...how did it even find it, if
that server is not the PDC emulator?

The workstations / member servers will use their authenticating
DC as their time partner. The domain controllers will use the
PDC emulator as the authoritative time server. Run net time on
that particular DC. Does it show the DC as the authenticating
time server? Try net time /domain on the new W2kpro workstation.
You should now see authoritative time server (PDC).
