Pinging all wireless network gurus!

Using a Linksys WAP11 and WMP54G PCI card on a XP Pro system, from boot up,
it is taking approximately 2-3 minutes before actual connection to the home
network occurs. Is this normal, as it seems like a long time compared to the
hard wired systems. If not, what can I do to speed the connection time up.

TIA

Do you have the latest MS Windows Updates installled? MS Knowledge Base
article 826942 describes an update which resolves among other problems:

"You Experience a Long Delay When You Connect to a Wireless Network

When you connect to a wireless network by using 802.1x authentication, your
network connection may take between 30 and 60 seconds to be established. This
problem occurs because the Wireless Zero Configuration service is delayed when
it tries to start. The Wireless Zero Configuration service does not start in a
timely manner because it depends on the NETMAN component, but the NETMAN
component has not yet been loaded at startup."

Check out

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=826942

for more information on that Windows update.

Yes, latest updates installed, but the one you gave was not showing. So I
went ahead and installed it, but no change.

Thanks.

Well hell, how hard is it... "but the NETMAN component has not yet
been loaded"... That's polite for "our OS is dog slow and it needs to
load up some DLL's before we can get that running"... The good news
is the NEXT time you connect it will be real fast...

I am not a guru.

I do know that your 'delays' seem short compared to mine.
I don't know the term for the little icon and dialogue box for the wireless
network connection (in XP) so let me call it box d.

From boot up

There is a period while box d says no connection available
then it says one or more connections available
then eventually it says connected.

EACH phase can take minutes I find.

I have been doing radio coverage trials in my village (using netstumbler)
and have noticed that it has taken up to 9 mins to get connected.

I will follow up the knowledge base article.

This is to the person who stated they had the WMP54G working on XP Pro
system (albeit with delayed access)

Can you advise of how you managed to get your drivers to operate within Xp
to allow the WPM54G to function (Please see post entitled "Linksys WPM54G
and Win XP driver issue" (02/03/04)

many thanks as their are a number of people out their who cannot get this to
function under Xop at all.
