throttle bandwidth

Hello and thank you for your time,

I have been given the task of throttling bandwidth on a network with-out any
additional hardware applications. The office uses an ISA server as their
proxy / firewall / cache server), one of the main problems is this; users
that VPN to the network are using way too much bandwidth and its being to
slow down the external network.

I have been asked if I can put a "CAP" on the VPN Speeds of the servers and
to also put a cap on the internal network speed to the outside world.

From what I know to this date is that ISA-server can not limit bandwidth; it
can only priorities protocols. That being said, how would I go about
limiting the bandwidth usage of this network?

Thanks.

You can do it in your routers and switches assuming they are managed and can
do QoS.

I have stated this fact to the CTO. The honest truth is this. He doesn't
want to buy a new router or switches for the networks, and wants for me to
do this with that they currently have

Firstly, I don't think you can solve this without spending some money. What
you really need is a packet shaping device, but that's going to cost $$$

So what about adding another internet connection and splitting the VPN
traffic from the other connection... given that Internet connections these
days are very cheap?

Hope this helps somewhat...

Lets clarify that.

QoS will not throttle the VPN traffic specifically. QoS will ensure that the
"other" unspecified protocols and services can be allocated a certain amount
of guarenteed bandwidth.

So why are they going to pay you thousands of $$$ to come up with a
crappy solution when for $4,000. you can buy a quality packet shaping
device that does everything you want and a lot more? Makes no sense.
Corporate stupidity cracks me up.

Or maybe you just make minimum wage?
