The Thompson 330 Speedtouch USB ADSL modem is an abomination, it will
fail at the slightest hint of static electricity, power surges,
inclement weather etc..

If you want something reasonable you would put that in a draw & forget
about it & buy yourself an ADSL router..

Tell that to the 50 or so end users I've visited over the last 6 months
where it's proved to be a dead Thompson. It's getting to the stage
where when I contact the customer I ask them what they are trying to use
& as soon as they Thompson 330 I don't look any further & just go
straight to site. In a large majority of them I have been proved
correct in my assumptions & have proved so by getting a (officially not
carried for purpose) Thompson out of my van & swapping them. I then
have to wrestle it out of their hands once they see it working & have to
inform them to contact their ISP.

There is a newer model out now, I just hope that it performs a little
bit better..

Experience differs - just because one person has probs, does not mean everyone else does - and vice versa. Too bad for those 50 - but as stated, mine is running fine.

In three months, the one here has occaisionally lost sync,
a total of less than six times, I guess (I'm not really
counting). I wouldn't have chosen it, but it came free,
and it mostly seems to work fine.

Perhaps I'm lucky, or have nice weather, whatever. Perhaps
it helps driving it from a linux box. Or maybe it's worth
using it for a bit and seeing how it pans out.

Whatever you do don't try using it during an electrical storm (I kid you
not)
