Hi,

I have a Windows 2003 Server which is running an anti-virus program.
The program is configured so that it sends e-mail notification after
each scheduled virus scan. These messages are to be sent through stmp.

I have entered my smtp server information in the program but I am not
receiving any messages.

At first I thought it was because the smtp server was not in my Trusted
Sites for the trusted zone so I added it, but this did not fix the
problem. The only way to test SMTP that I could think of would be to
install Outlook on the server and test it with an account, which I am
reluctant to do unless absolutely necessary.

My feeling is that the software cannot access my ISP's SMTP server
right now for security reasons.

Does your ISP's SMTP server require authentication?
You could try testing with BLAT (google for it - it's free). You can also
insta//use your own SMTP server on this box instead of using someone else's.

I had a similar problem using Blat, a freeware command line stmp
mailer. It was to to McAffee's virus and security tools. They were
preventing applications from connecting to the STMP port (port 32).

Solution is to
1. open the McAffee "Virus Scan Console" ("C:\Program Files\Network
Associates\VirusScan\mcconsol.exe" on my machine)
2. Click 'Access Protection' to open the "Access Protection Properties"
dialog
3. highlight the rule restricting access to port 2 and click edit.
4. in the 'Add or Edit....' dialog that pops up, enter the name of the
exectable you want to be able to run in the list of 'Excluded
Processes'.
