Thank you for your response. Before I got to try it though, I
rechecked the linksys web site and saw that there was a new firmware
upgrade, version 1.45.3 which was release July 1st. I installed the
patch, though it is only a beta, and almost everything seems to work
out fine. The only buggy behavior is that when i come out of sleep
mode, I must disconnect and then reconnect to the access point.
Still, this is relatively minor compared to the issues I was having.
I am going to try maximizing the power saving functionality in the
device manager as mentioned in step 2a below and see the effects.

Of note, when I downloaded the patch earlier this week, the release
notes update list specifically said:

The following has been updated:

1. Fixed unstable HTTP and FTP download.
2. Fixed MSN 4.7 and 5.0 compatibility.
3. Updated for XBox compatibility
(This is not XBox Certified)
4. Fixed UPnP connection.
5. Fixed connection with a Centrino
wireless.
6. Fixed Multiple Microsoft VPN connections.
7. Fixed an issue with PPPoE connection going
on a Secured sites report by some ISP.

now, however, they have replaced the Centrino wireless portion (#5)
with:

5. Fixed connection issues with certain wireless clients in power save
mode

in any case, it works. my guess is that there is a bug with the
wireless card/software combo in the centrino solution. in their
effort to maximize pwer efficiency, i think they mucked with the
networking behavior which bolluxs all but the most fogiving access
points. this would also explain why step 2a below helps. why they
would try to save power on network connectivity, though, is beyond me.
it seems rather stupid and would only give minimal returns. what
exactly does it do? ration out packets sent?
