Thinking about changing ISP

Got my eye on Pipex, but open to other recommendations.

Just wanted to know if my current connection with Demon has to be cut off
before Pipex can connect me, resulting in a fortnight without Broadband, or
if it'll just switch over from one to the other on day 14 or whatever.

TIA for the advice

Not sure on the timescales for a change over, not had to do that myself, as
far as Pipex are concerned my personal experience has been nothing but good.
I had an account with them at my old place for 8 months before I moved and
hooked up with them again when my new exchange got enabled 4 months ago.
There have been one or two short term problems (1 hour max) with email
servers but nothing to bother me.
The helpline was a little slow to get through on the single time I had to
use them but nothing too drastic.
They have been very quick handling my orders and enabling the service and
they were quick getting the hardware to me when I signed up the first time I
used them although the microfilters supplied with the modem were garbage (as
most of them tend to be when supplied with modems) and have been replaced
with quality ones.
The download speeds are very consistent.
The binary news groups are slow but there is an alternative "text only" news
server that works just fine.
I am sure there will be plenty of people reporting the same experience with
other ISP's.

I've been very pleased with PlusNet - excellent customer support.

To show I'm not totally biased - awards at
http://www.plus.net/awards/index.html

You could even sign up via http://tinyurl.com/3hhqh and reduce my bill for
me!

A couple of friends have gone with Plusnet and are happy.

Any reason you are ditching Demon? I'm waiting for my broadband to be
activated with them!

Well, I've just had a look at the page, and those awards are all a
year old.

My node seems to have more problems than any others. Regular night-time
outages. Apart from that, they've been VERY consistently good to me, and
particularly understanding when I lost my job and couldn't pay for a few
months.

I really haven't got a complaint apart from the sporadic outages. My issue
isn't with Demon, it's with the connection. Oh and the news server sucks.

Can any technical minded bods out there answer this one: The connectivity
and packet loss I've been experiencing have been localised to one specific
node. What are the chances that this will continue with a new ISP? From what
I understand, I'll be on a different ISP's LAN but I am kinda assuming the
"node" is a hardware router at the local exchange. Is this the case or am I
way off the mark or talking out my hat or what?

Cheers

That's good to know. I've probably been on dial up with Demon for 10
years and apart from this service costing FAR too much over the going
rate, they've been so reliable that I normally forget I'm using an ISP ,
if you know what I mean - whatever I want to do with the net just works!

Its also going to be a pain in the Butt to have to change my domain name
and efax number.
I thought I was going to have to change the domain because of all the
spam I get, but I'm prepared to wait a month for them to introduce their
new spam filtering system and see how it goes.

Its been years since I've used any binary groups, but I regularly use
usenet and again, their news server gives me no probs at all!?!
Lets just hope broadband is just a quicker, more convenient (and
cheaper!) version of the dialup service I've had over the years.

As to your connection probs..... You may be correct in your assumption.
Switching to another ISP may be a bit of a hassle and you may end up in
the same boat. What have you tried to sort out the problem?

Apart from a constant stream of Tech Support tickets, if it's a duff router
at the exchange, what could I do?

I guess not much, it just seems that swapping ISP on the off chance that
it might cure the problem seems a bit drastic!
Worrying that Demon/BT have not been able to sort it though.

Are you on the limits of getting ADSL? If so, you might run the risk of
them checking the line and telling you that you can't have it anymore!!!
I won't begin to tell you the nightmare I've had trying to approval to
order broadband, but lets just say that once its in, I'm doing nothing
to get BT involved again unless I have to ;-)

I'm quite close to the exchange, definitely not at the margins. BT are
regularly performing updates on that node and a few others. Knowing their
methods I'm guessing they're saving the expense of replacing the router by
fixing it once a fortnight. Go figure.
