Thinking of AOL

I'm thinking about switching to AOL. I was with them years ago on dial-up
and found them reliable - which was probably just as well, given their poor
technical support.

What are they like as an ADSL provider?

Also, the one thing that infuriated me about them was their failure to offer
a 'real' POP 3 email service (I have some vague memories of a hack that used
to allow this)

Do they still use that bloated proprietary email interface - any other
quirks or things I should be aware of?

Many thanks for your help.

It's a minimum of an 18 month contract even if you migrate in and
I believe payable in full if you leave early. Some of their packages
have a 24 month minimum term.

They ceased offering "unlimited" and use traffic managment, and I suspect
they are increasingly like TalkTalk given they are now owned by
craponewhorehause

They'd just added POP access when I left for Sky and allowed
IMAP acces for some time, but automatically deleted read emails after a few
days which made IMAP access rather pointless in my view. Better to
use gmail.

Technical support was the worst I've experienced.

A genuine thank you! - I had no idea that the spectacularly awful Carphone
Warehouse owned them! - that, alone, is enough to make me run away as fast
as my little legs can carry me

A similarity with 'Talk Talk' merely adds a few more maggots to the corpse!

Thank goodness for newsgroups.

Plusnet are very far from the 'best broadband provider' despite what any hooky
customer surveys may say.

You *do* get a free laptop with the 24 month contract though!

My advice is to avoid all the large consumer ISPs. They are uniformly dreadful.

I have been ith AOL for around nine months and have experienced their
support through a house move and number change. They are excellent to
work with, no problems whatsoever. They have been more than helpful
every step of the way.I would be happy to recommend them. I have a 12
month contract for broadband silver at £9-99 per month. Excellent
value for money.
