Where are these extraneous WUSB54G connections found?

I am using a Linksys WRT54G router connected to a cable modem on the second
floor of my house. There is a WinXP computer hardwired to the router and
modem there. My remote WinXP desktop is located in the finished basement
and I am using a WUSB54G adapter there. The distance between the router and
adapter is app. 50', but the signal has to travel from one corner of the
house almost to the opposite corner of the house and two floors down. Lots
of interference sources (cordless phones, microwave oven, concrete, walls).
The adapter signal speed cycles between 1 Mbps and 54 Mbps constantly
(changing every few seconds or so), but most times remaining at the lower
end of the scale. Likewise, the signal strength cycles between 'very low'
and 'excellent' at about the same cycle rate as the speed, and also
remaining at the lower end of the scale most of the time. Curiously, my
internet experience doesn't seem to be affected by the speed or strength of
the signal. It is mostly always slow, and sometimes slower than dial-up.

Attempting to get a better signal, I have moved the USB adapter all over my
work area, trying to improve the signal with varying success. I only have a
6' USB cable so my choice of location is limited. I have not found an area
that remains good throughout the day.
I have uninstalled the adapter and reinstalled it a number of times, trying
different USB ports, etc., but each time I moved to another port, or
afterwards go back to the original port, the computer finds new hardware
installed at that port. I then I reinstall the software, and the connection
number increments by 1. I am now up to "Wireless Network Connection 10".

I would like to remove all these extra WUSB54G Wireless Network
Connections. Where are they hiding? I did a computer search for 'linksys'
and 'wusb54g' and only found one file: "WUSB54G.EXE-0547E7E0.pf" in
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\

Barring that, how can I uninstall this adapter so that all traces of it are
gone, so I can start over from scratch? It seems the Linksys uninstaller
for the adapter does not remove all the files. After uninstall, I have
found many registry entries for 'linksys'.

I only bought this wireless system because I was too lazy to snake 100+
feet of cat5 cable through the walls, ceiling, attic, and floors of my
house. Maybe next Spring I will have more enthusiasm.

We have almost exactly the same setup and same issues!!! What I have at
home:

1. In the family room on the 2nd floor, a Linksys WRT54G router connected to
a cable modem (Rogers Cable Service in Toronto) and wired connected to a
desktop PC running Windows XP Professinal through which I configure the
router.
2. My WRT54G is of hardware revision 1.1, and yesterday I downloaded from
Linksys' website the latest firmware (revision 2.02) and flashed the
router's firmware without any problem.
3. In the basement (about 60 feet from the router), I have a laptop running
Windows 2000 Professional and a desktop running Windows 2000 XP
Professional.
4. I have one single Linksys WUSB54G wireless USB network adapter for the
laptop or the desktop in the basement.
5. When the WUSB54G connected to the laptop or to the desktop in the
basement, the wireless connection randomly drops (sometimes it happens a few
times a day, but other times the wireless connection stays connected for a
few days without any break).
6. The Linksys WLAN moniter application and Windows network conneciton icon
both show the wireless connection throughput of between 1 Mbps and 40 Mbps,
changing rapidly in between 1 Mbps and 40 Mbps all the time.
7. When the wireless connection is not broken, the performace is pretty good
in general. For example, on the 2nd floor with the PC wired connected, I get
around 350KB/Sec download speed, with the wireless connection in the
basement, I get around 50 to 150 KB/Sec download speed.
8. Somehow with the Desktop running Windows XP Professional in the basement,
everytime I plug in the WUSR54G, Windows XP would say "found new hardware"
and would install the driver! But with the laptop running Windows 2000
Professional, there is no such problem.

Sorry for the long post which perhaps does not even offer any help to you
;-)

Sorry I shall correct a typo here. It should be ".. a desktop running
Windows XP Professional" not "WIndows 2000 XP Professional"

Thanks for responding, even if you didn't have an answer.
This wireless system is so unstable that I still have my dialup connected
to the computer as a backup, and am using that now.
Another thing that I have noticed is that when I can't get the adapter to
get a signal, and then use the dialup while the adapter is still connected
(hoping to stir the adapter into action), my computer will sometimes reboot
by itself.

Coming soon to eBay: one WUSB54G adapter.

You have to have a dial-up as a backup? In my case at least the wired
connection (cable modem to WRT54G to PC) is always connected with no
problem. I guess you mean for a laptop/desktop in your basement you are
using dial-up as a backup when the WIRELESS does not work?

Yes, I am in transition between dial up and broadband. I'm not giving up
the dialup until I get the broadband working properly. Once I get the
networked broadband, I can drop the dialup account and the phone line.

We had three 3 computers and 3 separate dialup accounts, with a separate
dedicated phone line for each account, until we got broadband. Two of the
dialup accounts and their phone lines are now gone and those computers
became hardwired to the non-wireless network router. I'm the last dialup
holdout because of the problem of running the cat5 all the way through the
house to my computer. I thought I would try the wireless route rather than
tackling that job, so I bought a wireless router to replace the
non-wireless router, connected those other two computer's cat5 cables to
the wireless router's ports, and bought 2 wireless adapters at the same
time. One for my computer and the second one for my other daughter's new
computer which is two rooms away and only about 30 feet from the router.
She is having no problems with the wireless adapter at her computer.
