There are no logon servers to serve your logon request

Hi,

my laptop joins domain abc.com, and I connect to our client network via VPN,
our client has a domain def.com. Once vpn connected, I can ping the client's
server by ip address, however, I can not access the shared folder by
\\ipaddres
it says "There are no logon servers to serve your logon request(this happens
when I logon to abc.com domain using cached credentials)".

All ports are open for vpn connetions.

Anyone knows why, and how to successfully connect by \\ipaddress

Thanks
Frank

Hi Frank,
It would help if provided a bit more details or at least
the OS and domain environments. Is your computer
connected to the abc.com domain? Is there a trust
relationship in place? Sounds as if the def.com domain
is not able to find a DC for the abc.com domain to verify
your credentials. The error you are seeing means the DC
cannot be found for authentication. The DC is found by
resolving a domain name 1c group name which contains
the tcp/ip address of the PDC and all BDCs of the domain.

Hi Frank,
What is the OS your are using to connect to DEF.COM? Is it W2K or
Windows XP? If W2K you may have to make a connection to the IPC$ of the
remote system first then connect to the shares.

First try \\IPaddress\IPC$ give it correct credentials. If this works
you could be able to now connect to the shares. This will work on both W2K
and XP.

In XP there a new service called Credential Manager. Using Credential
Manager you can tell the XP client to send the correct username and
password to the server. So you could manually create this on XP using this
feature to pass the credentials you can use in the DEF.COM domain.

Hope this Helps!

This is a quick and dirty workaround , but if I understand what you are
trying to do correctly, one work around will be to log onto your laptop with
a local account rather than a domain account. Then when you try to connect
to the clients shared folder you will be given a username/password prompt.
This eliminates your domain and any need for
trust relationships. You will however need a valid account to use from the
client domain access the share.

Hi All,

Just make it clearer, this happens when I am using win2k pro from coffee
bar without attaching to any domain. I usually logon to my domain abc.com
from win2k pro, if I loggon at office (attached to our network, there isn't
any problem). I think the win2k needs to find the domain abc.com GC server
to authenticate whenever I needs to pass credentials to access share, when i
am in coffee bar, there is no GC server available, that is why.

I think Jonathan F is correct, I am able to connect by \\ipaddress using the
win2k pro local account. However, I am still hoping a way to be able to
connect under domain loggon in the coffee bar(this saves me trouble of
loggon on and off, most importantly my profile info).

thanks
Frank

You could use the "connect as" feature and specify
an account on the domain you are trying access.

On the Map Network Drive dialogue box click on
"connect using a different username" then specify a
valid account in the domain you are trying to access
and proceed the username with the domain name e.g.,
domain\username.
