Is there a good client-oriented access point?

I'm trying to find a device that can put a desktop PC, via its Ethernet
jack, onto an 802.11b network. I tried the Acer WarpLink access point
(also sold in different cover as the D-link DWL-1000AP) but its
configuration software seems to only support making it the hub, not a
branch, of the network. Supposedly one of the Netgear or Linksys units can
do it, but does anyone have real experience that proves it, or is it just a
claim? To be a client means that it has to listen for the desired SSID,
rather than blare it out and confuse everybody else on the network about
who's boss, and it has to let its own management IP address be set easily,
or picked up from DHCP on another AP.

Thanks!

You do not need an access point - but an Ethernet bridge adapter like this
http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=36&prid=602

or you can go USB
http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=36&prid=435
and http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=36&prid=519

That's exactly what I use A DLink 900AP+ for.

Thanks. So far one D-Link and one Linksys (WET11) recommendation, and
nobody says they don't work... So I will look for one of these. (Alas,
they don't go cheap on eBay -- not all that common, and apparently high
demand! Too bad I don't think I can program the DWL-1000AP motherboard to
be a 900AP+.)

about 64 bucks. Just curious, why not try a USB or PCI wireless card?
Cheaper than the access point. I use the 900AP because I needed the
versatility of a 100 foot network cable to position the client hardware to
pick up the wireless signal. If not, I would go with a $20 PCI card.
