Testing Internet access to my webserver from inside? (proxy?)

Is there a simple way (e.g. third party server) to bounce/"proxy" http
requests from a local machine out and back thru my router so I can
check that the public route to my local web server is set up properly?
Packets addressed to my own IP don't seem to ever come back in through
the router (is this to be expected?).

Pick up the phone, call a friend and ask him/her to check.

Friends are fine for initial confirmation but I wish to check the
routing more regularly and more thoroughly than I care to ask my
friends to do!

I have seen mention of third party "proxies" that enable you to do
this, but the links were dead - any new leads would be welcomed.

In the mean time I'll dust off an old 64K modem and dial out - which is
a better test anyway - just not so convenient.
