Testing a firewall.

I just connected a Linksys firewall and it all seems to be working fine.
When I installed it I was surprised that it did not ask me for any IP
address, driver, or anything. It just picked up my old cable connection and
started working without any software interventions.

Does this sound right and is there a way to test the firewall?
