Test Speed of network?

I'm working with a School who recently put in a gigabit fiber link and they
think there is an issue with the link and that its slower then expected.

I was hoping to attach a few laptops to either end to do some speed/link
tests.

Any Recommendations on software to do the test?

Thanks,
Scott<-

FTP. Get some kind of Shareware FTP server on one end and download a file to
the other. It should give you a pretty accurate representation of the
network speed. You are going to need a pretty big file to take advantage of
gigabit.

The method I always used when I did network hardware testing for a living
was to send an extremely large file (like a DVD image) across the network
to another machine with enough space and time it. From there, it's simple
math to figure out the speed.
