how to test security in wireless network?

I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 and have recently enabled both MAC filtering
and disabled SSID broadcast. How do I test if disabling SSID
broadcast is working? I tried netstumbler, but the program closes as
soon as it starts scaning... which is a known bug for the developer.
Are there any other user-friendly sniffer programs that I can
download?

SSID broadcast just helps people stop picking it from a list of networks
easily.
If you have enabled WEP, then knowing your SSID does nothing, and
cracking WEP is made no harder.
If you have not enabled WEP, then enable it.

You might check the utility for your wireless device, sometimes you can scan
for networks from there.
