Sure. The same way as always. Why the difficulty, if any, with "fedora
core" in particular?

Hard to tell?

Anyway, the easiest would be using 'time scp/ftp ...' and
transfer some large file and calculate from the result, if
scp/ftp clients don't show it.

My personal preference would be using 'iptraf' while transferring
large files.

Another idea, shape the outgoing traffic and use tc (preferable
with watch) to check which limit you can reach.

On the other hand there are numerous packages (the OP could
search freshmeat.net) available which should work on almost any
distro.

<:-) This phrase "is there any way" (note the anyway *> any way
correction gets my goat. Apologies. No, please do not ask me to
explain what kind of a goat I have got!

scp has tcp + ssh overhead, but then it doesn't matter WHAT he does,
so long as he does the same thing everywhere, and compares the results.

ftp is probably closest to raw wire speed, but only if his connectivity
is good. Otherwise it'll be nothing like.

I use netperf, generally.

Well, I think he has ftp :-).

Concerning the internet: Look for "Speedtest" on google. For example, a good
austrian speed test would be www.speedtest.at

LOL...The anyway/any way problem seems to be related to language
skills. Without looking it up:

English --> German
anyway --> Wie dem auch sei/Wie auch immer
any way --> Irgendeine Moeglichkeit

Where "oe" should be "?" but that won't show up in all
newsreader, despite it doesn't even work with my configured
newsreader language settings.

Yup, however with really good network equipment and fast systems,
one can easily reach about 12.5 MB/sec with both. (tested)
