Hi

I'm helping out a friend with their new Tesco broadband connection - they
have everything they need except the ADSL dial number I need to set up a
connection! They're having trouble getting through to Tesco to get this -
can anyone help me out? Surely it's not a closely guarded secret but I can't
seem to find the number by googling.

Thanks.

What the hells an ADSL dial number? I thought the whole point of ADSL was
always on not having to dial numbers?

ive been trying to set up the same service on a friends PC also, he keeps
gettin a 0721 error message, cannot connect to ISP or something like that
(ive never seen it im doing this over the phone) but according to
www.tesco.net theres some problems mentioning a 721 error

so i think its tesco at fault and not the PC

jsut a guess though, im on cable and have no experiance of this ADSL malarky

There's actually no number - it might be requested as the use of USB or PCI
modems seems to be a bodge making use of Dial-Up Networking (which would,
of course, use a phone number). Try 0123456789 :-) People using routers
never see mention of any phone number, but if there is a problem getting
Tesco.Net's ADSL support people on the phone, that's worth knowing!!

There is usually no number for adsl, just put in any number as adsl does not
really connect. Well it does, just not like a dial up number account would.

Its an OS fault. windows cannot distinguish between adsl "always on" and dial
up. So when creating a DUN it requests a number. Not everyone knows that adsl
does not require a number, but I don't think windows works without a number, so
putting in any number works fine.

Before I bought a router, I had to use the dialup number

"0,38"

to get my Speedtouch modem working - it's a "VPI/VCI" whatever one of
those is.

Perhaps the original poster should try that. Apparently it's standard
across the UK except in Hull.

Sometimes the phone number is used to pass the VPI and VCI to an ADSL
modem - so for IPstream, some modems require you to dial 0,38

Did you use the CD that came in the box or are you using your own
hardware to connect up?

I used the modem in the box and the CD to install the drivers and it
setup my Tesco.net broadband connection as dialling plain old 0.

This works.
