What is a licensing server and what does it do? Is there
anything specifically that I need in order to make sure
that my terminal server clients authenticate correctly on
my terminal server? This is my first Terminal Server
install.

I assume that you are running this in application mode and
not remote administration mode. I believe that you can
run for 90 days before you are forced to enable licensing
if you wish to continue using terminal services. After
you enable it, make sure that you have the appropriate
terminal licenses or you will have to order them. It goes
through an online check/registration process with
microsoft so make sure that you have your terminal license
numbers ready. This number is different than the one for
windows server. If you are not ready for this, it will
disable all terminal logons to your server until you
successfully register
