We have a similar issue that we may have solved. You would want to verify a
few things.
1. PagedPool usage around time of hang.
2. SIze of user hive - should be around 2 Mb or less depending on installed
hardware.
3. Run "cprofile -v -L" on TS when users are logged off. This will check
profile for obvious damage and clean out unused references to some degree. I
use it to determine if the profile is corrupt. A corrupt profile will refuse
to scan.
4. Remove any unused software or utilities that are not needed until problem
is resolved. We found that Compaq Insight Manager was agravating the problem
because the installation had become corrupted.
5. Be sure, on WS2003, that you have no kernal mode print drivers
installed. This caused the same issue when we first insatlled the server.
Removing the old drivers and moving all printer to a separate spooler cleared
it with no problems for over a year.
These are just a few things I have found. Be careful about tuning for Paged
Pool on WS2003. The W2K KB does not fully address how WS2003 uses Paged Pool
especially for registry hives. There is a separate KB for WS2003 and hive
loading.
Your issue is similar in that users with temporary profiles can log in. We
found that deleteing the profile and rebuilding it cleared up some users.
After that we found that something would slow the system to a crawl. Even
lgging all users off didin't solve the performance issue. The meory couters
didn't show any issues. Paged Pool usage was high but not high enough to
kill the system.
Tuning attempts proved that teh tuning KBs can make the problem worse. We
are now running with only a 40% Paged Pool triming level and running poolmon
24X7 and waiting for the returmn of the problem.
Good luck. This seems to be adifficult issue on TS.
