Telewest "Fixed" IP

I recently upgraded our business account from Telewest to a "fixed"
IP.

However, it has become apparant that the IP still comes from a dynamic
IP block. Telewest say that they only offer truely static IP's to
leased line customers...how many small/medium sized businesses can
afford a leased line?!

I am running an exchange server but having a few problems with SPAM
blocking services such as SORBS. Because our IP is coming from a
dynamic range, SORBS blocks mail from our IP.

Is this common practice for all ADSL providers?

Can you relay outgoing mail via Telewest? That might help.

I guess that is one option - but I wanted complete control of our
email and the email logs.

You can ask to have your IP address unblocked, Now whether it would be im
not sure, All you can do is contact the relevent people and ask nicely, But
I doubt AOL will let it through even then

I have had mixed success. Many people have been using common sense and
unblocking our IP. However, I have not heard anything from SORBS in 21
days. It's still a problem that our "fixed" IP is from a dynamic
address range though...if I pay for a fixed IP I dont want to be
issued an IP from a dynamic range and then go through all the hassle
of manually getting it delisted from the many different SPAM blocking
DB's. If I had a truely fixed IP not from a dynamic address range I
wouldnt have all these problems!

I've spoken to a few other ISP's this afternoon and they all insist
that when they offer a fixed IP...it is truely that and it does not
come from a dynamic range. I was even told by a sales rep at one ISP
that the Telewest "fixed" IP's do actually change every 6 months. That
is going to cause a headache with me changing MX records.

No Demon have always used fixed IP addresses, even for dial up. The Home
ADSL is now dynamic, but the HomeOffice and Business are all fixed. I
run on a fixed ADSL IP address.

Indeed. Personally I don't accept any mail from dynamic IP addresses.
That results in a 60% reduction in the volume of spam which the server
has to process. A static IP and valid rdns is pretty much essential
for running a mailserver now.

I assume you use cable from Telewest? If so then you've pretty much
had it. If its ADSL (do they do that?) then simply migrate to an ISP
who does give out static IP assignments. There's plenty to choose
from.

Oh and two other things :

1) You are clinically insane if you expose an exchange server to the
internet;
2) SORBS (and other DNSBLs) _doesn't_ block anything. Server admins
choose to use the DNSBLs to block you - this might seem pedantic but
if you asked SORBS "why are you blocking me" then your email is now in
the bin (and rightly so).

HTH.

Oh and one more point - if Telewest have actually assigned you a
static IP but it's incorrectly listed as dynamic in a DNSBL then ask
Telewest to contact the DNSBL maintainer to correct this. It is not in
anyone's interests to have incorrect listings.

NB - don't bother trying to argue with the DNSBL maintainer that your
IP address is static as you will be ignored.

You could change ISP... www.freedom2surf.com and www.zenadsl.co.uk have
fixed ip's as default.
